Montenegro Guide
The coast
Extending from the southern tip of Croatia down to the border with Albania, the Montenegrin coast is the country's real jewel. Blessed with abundant sunshine, warm water and endless strips of long sand and pebble beaches, this startlingly beautiful coastline packs in some of the most striking scenery of the entire Adriatic. The seaboard ribbon shelters shallow bays, rocky coves and white-stone fishing villages, alongside a dense concentration of traditional seaside resorts, all backed by steeply rising mountains and rolling green hills dotted with cypress trees and olive plantations. The coast also offers a rich complement of historical sights; almost all the principal seaboard towns fell into the hands of the Venetians, whose occupation left its mark, bestowing them with a rich architectural legacy. The coast can be divided into three fairly distinct regions, namely the Gulf of Kotor, the Budva Riviera and the area south of here, which essentially comprises the towns of Bar and Ulcinj.
During July and August, the height of the summer season along the coast, many hotels ramp up their prices – in some cases almost doubling the normal rate – and the major coastal spots can get uncomfortably congested. For these reasons, the best time to visit is either side of those months (May, June and September) when there are some much better deals to be had.
