Lithuania Guide

Money

Most of life's essentials – including food, drink and travel – are relatively cheap in Lithuania, and even if you're on a strict budget you shouldn't have too much trouble enjoying yourself here. The only real exception is the price of accommodation, which is slowly creeping up towards Western European levels. Prices vary considerably, though, depending on which parts of Lithuania you stay in. In Vilnius and Klaipėda, a bed in a hostel will cost €15/£10/$19, while private rooms and the cheapest hotels work out at around €40/£28/$53 for a double, with the price of the same in a comfortable, medium-range hotel rising to €90/£60/$115. Out in the provinces you won't find much in the way of hostels or private rooms, but you can stay in a cheap hotel for as little as €24/£16.50/$25 per double room.

Once you've got accommodation out of the way, things are reasonably inexpensive: short journeys by bus are unlikely to make a serious dent in your budget: travelling from Vilnius to Trakai will cost you just over €1/£0.70/$1.30, while a ticket from Vilnius to Kaunas weighs in at around €5/£3.50/$6.60. Moving across country from Vilnius to Klaipėda costs in the region of €17/£12/$23.

About €15/£10/$19 per person per day will suffice for food and drink if you're shopping in markets for picnic ingredients, maybe allowing yourself a meal out in a cheap café or restaurant and limiting yourself to a couple of drinks; €30/£20/$38 a day should be enough for a sit-down lunch and a decent dinner followed by a couple of night-time drinks.
