2 Caffè Coloniale Piazzetta Viviani 14/C The best hot chocolate in the city, and good snacks in a mock-colonial setting, with attractive outdoor terrace. Opening time: Open 7am– midnight, closes 8pm on Mon.
3 Caffè delle Erbe Piazza delle Erbe 32 Known universally as Mazzanti, this is the loudest, youngest and coolest of the late-opening bars on the square. Opening time: Open until midnight. Closed Mon
4 Cappa Café Piazzetta Bra Molinari 1/A Large bar with eastern trappings, floor cushions, riverfront terrace and live jazz on Sun Oct– April. Opening time: Open all day till 2am daily

Le Vecete Via Pellicciai 32 Atmospheric osteria with a delicious selection of the savoury tartlets known as bocconcini, and good lunches. Its wine list is excellent, ranging from cheap to very expensive. Opening time: Open all afternoon, Sat 11.30am–1.30am and till 12.30am the rest of the week – later during the opera season
6 Osteria al Duomo Via Duomo 7/A Old city bar little changed by modern fashion and enlivened by live music on Wed afternoons from Sept to June. Interesting small menu, too, with local specialities such as bigoli with a donkey sauce (sugo d'asino). Opening time: Open 4pm– midnight; closed Sun

Osteria Sottoriva Via Sottoriva 9 Verona's traditional osterie don't come much more authentic than this: it's rumbustious, full of locals, and serves delicious food. In summer you can sit outside under the arches. They also give out crayons to keep the kids busy. Opening time: Open 10.30am–10.30pm; closed Wed
8 Rivamancina Vicolo Quadrelli 1, Veronetta Lively late bar on the left bank of the Adige, with trendy music and contemporary cocktails. Opening time: Mon– Thurs 7pm–1am, Fri– Sat 7pm–2am
