The Veneto

Arrival

If you're flying to Verona's Valerio Catullo airport at Villafranca, 12km away, you can get into the city by a regular APT bus (every 20min 7am–11.30pm; €4.50) from the airport to the train and bus station. Taxis costs about €25. Flights to Montichiari, 52km away, also called Brescia or, more optimistically, Verona, are served by a daily shuttle bus (€11) to the station that takes an hour; by taxi you'll pay about €90. Tickets to both airports can be bought on board the bus. For more information on both airports, go to www.aeroportoverona.it .

From the train and bus station it's a fifteen-minute walk to the centre. (Note that Verona Porta Nuova is the town's main train station, not Porta Vescovo.) Turn right outside the station (keeping to the right-hand side of the road) then left at the main junction with the broad Corso Porta Nuova, which leads straight to Piazza Bra, just inside the old city walls. If you don't fancy the walk, you can get a bus; tickets must be bought before boarding, either from the machines alongside bay A or from the tabacchi inside the train station ticket hall. They cost €1 and are valid for any number of journeys within an hour. If you are coming by car you'll find car parks well signed all round the city – eg, near the Arena or at Piazza Isolo in the Veronetta. If you are staying in a hotel in the old centre the hotel must pass your car registration number to the police.

Note that under draconian new regulations in Verona anyone dressing immodestly, littering or picnicking on the steps of public monuments can be fined.
