San Giovanni

    The area immediately south and east of the Esquiline and the Colosseum is known as San Giovanni, after the basilica complexthat lies at the end of Via Merulana, which was, before the creation of the separate Vatican city state, the headquarters of the Catholic church. It's a mixed area, mainly residential, but it has some compelling sights, not least in the basilica itself.
