The interior houses the Renaissance chapel of St John the Baptist, whose ashes – legend has it – once rested in the thirteenth-century sarcophagus. Note the Byzantine frescoes of the Last Judgement above the main entrance. The Museo del Tesoro (Mon– Sat 9am– noon & 3–6.30pm; €5.50), housed in an atmospheric crypt, holds a polished quartz plate on which, legend says, Salome received John the Baptist's severed head.
