Carnia hiking

To plan a Carnia walking trip in advance, call in at the Udine office of the Società Alpina Friulana, Via Odorico da Pordenone 3 (Mon– Fri 5–7.30pm plus Thurs 9–10.30pm; 0432.504.290, www.scuolecaifvg.spin.it ). A useful website on the Carnia is www.carnia.it , providing information on mountain accommodation and other details. If you want to stay right in the heart of the mountains, your best option is the resort of Tarvisio, 65km northeast of Germona and just 6km from the Austrian border. A number of nature trails and longer walks radiate from the village and there's a helpful tourist office at Via Roma 10 ( 0428.2342, www.tarvisiano.org ). The nicest place to stay is the Albergo Valle Verde, just outside the village at Via Priesnig 12 ( 0428.2342, www.hotelvalleverde.com ; Price: €76-100).
