The Sotteranea Napoli are the remnants of a nearby Roman theatre as well as aqueducts and cisterns forty metres down below the old city. The latter were used from ancient times until the late nineteenth-century cholera outbreak, and then again as bomb shelters during World War II. You can see the remains on ninety minute tours.
