The Church of Ireland Christ Church Cathedral, which took almost a quarter of a century to complete once work began in 1773. This stately, Neoclassical edifice stands on the site of a previous medieval church, utilizing the base of the previous building. It features an ornate stuccowork ceiling and a fine window, added much later, by the stained-glass artist A.E. Child, as well as the somewhat grisly tomb of James Rice, a fifteenth-century mayor of Waterford, which graphically depicts a decaying corpse fed upon by worms and a toad. Just up from here on the Mall is another Roberts design, the squat City Hall.
