Pubs and bars

1 The Bridge House 35–37 Bedford St A Wetherspoon's mega-pub offering probably Belfast's cheapest pint of stout and a range of cheap meals.

2 Author Pick Crown Liquor Saloon 46 Great Victoria St The most famous and spectacular pub in Belfast, with a clientele that thinks itself intellectual (there's no music). Good repertoire of Ulster food – champ, colcannon and the like – and also Strangford oysters in season, which usually go by early afternoon.

3 The Deers Head 1 Lower Garfield St Fine, traditional pub, offering very filling bar meals.

4 The Monico 17 Lombard St Tiled floors, wood panelling and snugs galore characterize this traditional pub.

5 Author Pick Morning Star 17 Pottinger's Entry This fine old-fashioned bar, busy in the day, quiet at night, is one of Belfast's best preserved and provides a wonderfully good value buffet lunch.

Dubarrys 10–14 Gresham St 028/9032 3590 www.dubarrysbar.co.uk Plush new three-storey bar-cum-venue in one of the city's most run-down areas, certainly more laid-back than its competitors and featuring a lesbian night on the first Friday of each month in its top-floor Seduction Lounge.

Kremlin 96 Donegall St 028/9031 6060, www.kremlin-belfast.com . Ireland's biggest gay venue, featuring three bars and various themed nights of music, fun and games, including the hugely popular "Revolution" on Saturdays.

Mynt 2–16 Dunbar St 028/9023 4520, www.myntbelfast.com Lounge bar for all of the week whose downstairs (Wed– Sun) and upstairs (Fri & Sat) areas provide all manner of fun. The former concentrates on participatory entertainment such as quizzes and karaoke, while the latter is firmly aimed at all dance maniacs.

Union Street 14 Union St 028/9031 6060 www.unionstreetpub.com This daytime gastropub also hosts a variety of themed nights for gay men, ranging from karaoke to bingo, via deck-thumping DJs.
