Redressing the lack of green spaces in the centre is the Ega garden, southwest of the centre in the grounds of the Cyriaksburg castle (tram #2 to "Egapark" from Anger). Visit in spring for the largest ornamental flowerbed in Europe (6000 square metres), plus rose, water and Japanese gardens to explore along with a tropical butterfly house and cafés. The slab-sided fortification itself has been handed over as gardening museum, the Gartenbaumuseum (March– Oct Tues– Sun 10am–6pm, July– Sept also Mon; same ticket; www.gartenbaumuseum.de).
