Thuringia

Eating

Alboth's Futterstr. 15–16 0361/568 82 07 Erfurt's finest international cuisine is prepared by Claus Alboth, a rising star among Thuringia's gourmet chefs with a taste for creative Mediterranean-fusion flavours. There's a 300-strong wine list. Eve only, closed Sun & Mon.

Erfurter Brauhaus Anger 21 0361/562 58 27 Home-produced brews – a Pils, Weizen, Dunkel and a seasonal special – to go with Schnitzels and steaks in a cookbook of styles served in a no-nonsense beer hall.

Paganini Fischmarkt 13–16 0361/653 06 92 In Erfurt's ritziest Renaissance mansion, a relaxed restaurant that serves Italian cuisine and commands the largest terrace space on the square. Freshwater fish is a speciality of the house.

Author Pick Schildchen Schildgasse 3–4 0361/5 40 22 90 A laid-back locals' Gaststätte they'd probably prefer to keep secret. Tasty dishes such as beef roulade with red cabbage or sole with cheese gratin on a bed of spinach come at embarrassingly low prices. Closed Sun.

Wirsthaus Christoffel Michaelisstr. 41 0361/2 62 69 43 Thuringian sausages served by the panful alongside robust basics that are priced in taler in an idiosyncratic Middle Ages– themed restaurant – all good fun.

Zum Goldenen Schwan Michaelisstr. 9 0361/2 62 37 42 A room to suit every mood – a tavern downstairs, a bistro behind and a courtyard space – and sturdy regional dishes such as pork chops with a dollop of mustard washed down with unfiltered beers brewed on site.

Zum Wenigemarkt Wenigemarkt 13 0361/6 42 23 79 Traditional eating at its best in a cosy restaurant with dark-panelled walls. Schlachtfestplatte – a meat-feast of black and liver sausage and bacon served with Sauerkraut – is typical of a Thuringian menu which changes every century or so.

Koko Sushi Meister-Eckhart-Str. 8. Stylish, modern sushi joint and bar loved by students near the Predigerstrasse. The cheap food plates idle past on a conveyor belt to a soundtrack of chilled beats.

Café im Roten Turm Krämerbrücke 17 Tasty soups and salads are served in this understated boutique-style café beneath the vaults of the Aegidienkirche.
