1 Abacco Kürschnergasse 7 Hip bar with a maximalist style that's as glamorous as it gets in Erfurt – think crystal chandeliers and cattle-hide bar stools within a half-timbered house. Expensive and very glossy.
2 double b Marbacher Gasse 10 Slow-paced bar with an older student clientele who enjoy the six beers on tap, all-day breakfasts and cheap steaks.
3 Hemingway Michaelisstr. 45 A more than usually atmospheric member of the cigar, whisky and cocktail chain, thanks to a low-lit backroom that features a chunk of the building's medieval fabric.
4 P33 Pergamenterstr. 33 Lofty modern lounge-bar hidden away off Michaelisstrasse. Regional DJs at weekends and a menu of fusion food. Closed Mon.
5 SiJu Fischmarkt 1 Ignore the self-conscious punning name ("see you") and this is a good choice within the glass-walled arcades of the Rathaus, that segues from daytime café to evening bar. The terrace is perfect for people-watching and light lunches. Closed Sun eve.
6 Übersee Kürschnergasse 8 More relaxed than neighbour Abacco, this club-styled bar is quietly hip without ever trying too hard. Its terrace overlooking the Krämerbrücke is one of the best in town.
7 Vamos Domplatz 15 As Spanish a tapas bar as you'll find in Erfurt, decorated with tiles and with jamón hanging from the ceiling. Guitar music on Friday evenings.
8 Zwiesel Michaelisstr. 31 No-frills student Kneipe on the drinking strip that also serves cheap eats.
