    4 Badischer Hof Lange Str. 47 07221/93 40 www.steinberger.com Landmark place that was long the social centre of the rich and famous and whose thermal pools, steam baths and saunas make it the luxury historic hotel of choice for spa-goers – some rooms even have thermal spa water on tap. Sixteen luxurious rooms are furnished top to bottom in rich antiques and cleverly hide all their mod cons from view. Rooms are themed; book early – advance reservations are a must – and you can choose between the styles of Empire, Louis XV, Biedermeier, Victorian, Louis Philippe and Louis XVI. Price: €251 and above

    6 Brenner's Park Hotel Schillerstr. 4–6 07221/90 00 www.brenners.com The queen of Baden-Baden addresses in its own park before Lichtentaler Allee has all the effortless elegance of the town's heyday and remains world class. Lounges are furnished in Second Reich antiques, rooms have flowery fabrics and chandeliers. There's also an excellent modern spa and gym complex and the Park-Restaurant is a gourmet address. Doubles cost €310 but you can pay as much as €1650 for a suite in high season. Price: €251 and above

    7 Author Pick Der Kleine Prinz Lichtentaler Str. 36 07221/34 63 www.derkleineprinz.de Occupying two elegant city mansions, this sister hotel to the Belle Epoque has an upmarket rustic air and is decorated with prints of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's charming hero. Every room has a special feature – whirlpool, fireplace, balcony, tower – and the quality of the service and its restaurant are outstanding. Price: €201-250

    8 Löhr Lichtentaler Str. 19 07221/30 60 Central hotel, and by local standards cheap, with clean but nondescript en-suite rooms. Has wi-fi. Price: €81-100
