"I always carried a piece of Lübeck inside me, wherever I had to go," said Willy Brandt, the German chancellor and twentieth-century statesman celebrated in Willy-Brandt-Haus. Though intended as a homage to a local son, the museum is also a compelling document of the social tides that have swept through modern Germany, especially in sections that tackle the Ostpolitik which thawed icy relations with the GDR and won Brandt the Nobel Peace Prize – the certificate is displayed here.
