The Petrikirche is a walloping five-nave Gothic church whose spire towers over everything else in the west Altstadt. Badly damaged by air raids in 1942, it was patched up to serve as a gallery – the space is as much an attraction as the contemporary art exhibitions it holds. A lift takes you to a platform 50m up with a great view of the flying buttresses of the Marienkirche, like sails among the waves of terracotta roofs.
