Königstrasse is as an aristocratic Baroque parade that includes Drägerhaus and Behnhaus, merged to create a museum of art and culture. Behind the pinched frontage, the Drägerhaus opens out into an exercise in balanced refinement that speaks volumes about Lübeck high-life c.1800 and serves as a backdrop for displays of Classical furniture and objets d'art. The Behnhaus houses the town's gallery of Impressionist and Expressionist art beyond the largest hallway in town. Stand-out sections include a room by local son Friedrich Johann Overbeck, ringleader and most steadfast of the Nazarene artists who strived for high art through Italian Renaissance inspiration, and works by Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann and Edvard Munch.
