It's on the fourth floor of an apartment block 2km west of the centre; take buses #34, #100 or #101 towards Mettenhoff and alight at Dehnkestrasse. Reception 8am– noon, 4–9pm. Price: €21

4 DJH Kiel Johannesstr. 1 0431/73 14 88 www.djh-nordmark.de Large youth hostel 700m from the station on the east bank of the Kieler Förde; take buses #11 or #12 or cross sthe pedestrian bridge opposite the train station. Price: €17.60
5 Parkhotel Kieler Kaufmann Niemannsweg 102 0431/881 10 www.kieler-kaufmann.de The luxury address just north of the centre marries the old-world ambience of its late 1800s garden villa to modern glamour in refurbished rooms. Names in the guestbook include assorted European royals and politicians, including Chancellor Angela Merkhel. Great restaurant, too. Price: €151-200
6 Peanuts Hostel Harriesstr. 2 0431/ 364 22 08 www.peanuts-hostel.de 10min walk south of the train station in the Südfriedhof, which survived the bombs, this is more home than hostel, with just seven beds in three rooms. Call before to ensure the owner is around for check-in (usually mornings and early eve). Dorms €18–24.
