The Bode Valley
Arguably the finest local walk is the Hexenstieg along the Bode Valley (marked with blue triangles), which takes in spectacular scenery and rich flora, including gnarled trees hundreds of years old. It is best done by either taking a bus from Thale (#264 or #18) to the resort village of TRESEBURG, then walking the 10km back downstream, or for a longer walk take the chairlift up to Hexentanzplatz, walk the 10km trail (marked by red dots) to Treseburg, stop for lunch, then return to Thale via the Hexenstieg. Lunch options in Treseburg include Fischerstube, Ferienhotel Forelle, Oststrasse 28 (
039456/56 40), which specializes in a bewildering array of local trout served on a terrace outside; and Bergcafé, Oststrasse 27 (039456/275), with its inexpensive selection of salads, soups and sandwiches.
