Eating

Avalon Breiter Weg 227 0179/123 93 03 Basement restaurant with several cosy corners and a "Celtic" theme that tends to just look traditionally German. Reasonable prices (mains from €6) attract a young crowd and the small menu has a variety of meats and some interesting sauces – such as the apple-and-horseradish sauce over a pork chop. A few basic dishes try to keep vegetarians happy.

Le Frog Heinrich-Heine-Platz 1 0391/531 35 56 Brasserie in the Stadtpark, whose large beer garden regularly hosts live music. Good for breakfast and even better for Saturday and Sunday brunch, which tends to really draw the crowds. Otherwise the broad menu includes some local game and wild mushrooms along with a few good salads and veggie options. Mains average €11.

Liebig Liebigstr. 3 0391/555 67 54 Trendy spot that's as much a bar and café as restaurant, though the international food – which ranges from curries to steaks to Mediterranean dishes (all around €11) – is worth trying.

Petriförder Petriförder 1 0391/5 97 96 00 Large restaurant with rather pleasant riverside location and a rambling menu that includes numerous Italian options (most pizzas are a very reasonable €6) but also a good line in Schnitzel (€11) and Argentinian steaks (€14).

Wenzel Prager Bierstuben Leiterstr. 3 0391/544 66 16 Branch of a dependable, regional chain of rustic Czech places that specialize in good beers and various, moderately priced, heavy meat meals – all of which should apparently be chased by a Becherovka, an aniseed and cinnamon herbal liquor.

Café Lüder Allee Center On the top level of Magdeburg's biggest mall, it may lack ambience, but the quality of the cakes at this Konditorei is hard to argue with.

Grüne Zitadelle Café Breiter Weg 9 Good café, ideal for a quick bite with various snacks, cakes and pasta dishes served amid funky Hundertwasser designs.
