West of the Altstadt, a tall brick chimney poking from a gathering of half-timbered buildings announces the Technisches Halloren- und Salinenmuseum. On Sundays when the machinery is fired up you can view the salt-making process that effectively made Halle – the salt produced is sold in the shop – but on other days it's a case of appreciating the equipment's complexity and age.
