0345/21 25 70 The only microwbrewery in the old town, with a good line in its own Hallsch beers and various hearty traditional favourites – the goulash with dumplings and dark-beer sauce (€8.90) is excellent.

0345/299 76 79 Excellent café, which shares its entrance with the tourist office, and has two hundred years of tradition behind its splendid cakes and handmade pralines.

0345/208 08 03 Hip café with excellent breakfasts (€4–8), and a good selection of inexpensive soups, salads and mains like noodles and curries. There's often live jazz in the evenings, making it also a good place to start a bar crawl down Kleine Ulrichstrasse.

0345/290 16 04 Veggie place with moderately priced canteen lunches – soups €3, mains around €5 – turns into a fancier table-service restaurant in the evenings with rather more expensive and complex dishes like the good pumpkin-seed Rösti with pears and Roquefort (€8.50) or fried tofu with lemongrass in lime basmati rice (€9.50).

0345/470 45 88 Stylish pan-Asian place that does stir-fries which you design yourself, or choose from a menu from around €9. There's even some quite good sushi. Various events, DJs and cocktail evenings keep the place ticking over until late.
