The New Leipzig School of contemporary art's pinnacle is arguably at the excellent Spinnerei art-factory. The one-time cotton-yarn manufacturing centre provides workshop space for over a hundred artists (including Neo Rauch) whose work is displayed in its thirteen galleries; the first, Eigen + Art (www.eigen-art.com) in the former steam hall, remains one of the best. If you want to tap into the energy of Leipzig's artistic dynamo this is your place. The centre is in a rapidly gentrifying former industrial area 4km west of the GfZK complex. While you're in the area, you could head three streets north to Lützner Strasse 91 (Leipzig-Lindenau S-Bahn) for the Tapetenwerk (Tues– Fri 2–6pm, Sat noon–5pm; free; www.tapetenwerk.de), a five-gallery space created in a former wallpaper factory. Full listings of the exhibitions in over forty modern art galleries are in booklet Kunstindex.Leipzig and leaflet Kunst in Leipzig (also at www.kunstinleipzig.de), available at the tourist office and galleries.
