At the fringe of the Altstadt is the Runde Ecke, former Leipzig headquarters of GDR secret police, the Stasi. Captured by citizens on December 4, 1989, the building was made famous by news footage of peaceful protesters placing candles on its steps. Out of respect for a too-recent past, it is preserved as a museum (English notes available), where surveillance equipment remains in drab rooms and exhibits document the regime's oppression and paranoia – citizens rescued over six miles of documents from the shredder despite the pulping of files throughout November.
