Getting around
Municipal provider BVG (
www.dvbag.de ) operates a good public transport system to get between the north and south banks of the city and outlying sights; a single costs €1.80 or a four-card strip (Kurzstrecke) for single journeys of up to 2km is €4.50. Single day-tickets (Tageskarte) cost €4.50; those for a family (two adults, two children under 14) are €6 and for a group of up to five people €22. Useful transport centres are: the Hauptbahnhof; Postplatz, just south of the Zwinger; and Albertplatz in the Neustadt. Trams #3 and #7 go from the Hauptbahnhof to the Neustadt.
Bicycles are a fast way to zip around even if things get interesting when cycle lanes disappear: try Engel Reisen at Ostra-Allee 29 (Mon– Sat 9am–1pm & 2–6pm;
0351/281 92 06,
www.engel-fahrradreisen.de ) for rental.
Sächsische Dampfschiffahrt (
www.saechsische-dampfschiffahrt.de ) runs Elbe river cruises on what it claims is the world's oldest and largest fleet of paddle-steamers – trips depart from Dresdener Terrassenufer beside the Augustusbrücke and ply to up- and downriver destinations such as Meissen (single €11.40) and Saxon Switzerland (single to Bad Schandau €20.50) respectively.
