Behind the Galerie Kaufhof, courtyard department store DAStietz has enjoyed a new lease of life as a cultural centre with two museums: the Neue Sächsische Galerie (daily 10am–6pm, Wed till 8pm; €2, free Sun), with rotating displays of 12,000 postwar artworks from Saxony; and child-friendly natural history centre the Museum für Naturkunde (Mon,Tues, Thurs & Fri 10am–8pm, Sat & Sun 10am–6pm; €4). Arguably the most intriguing exhibit is free – a copse of tree trunks in the foyer that is estimated to have been fossilized in a volcanic eruption in the area 290 million years ago.
