1 Kellerhaus Schlossberg 2 0371/335 16 77 Not just the city's oldest restaurant, but its most charming, where traditional plates are served in a rustic seventeenth-century dining room – nice beer garden in summer, too. It's in the Schlossviertel north of the centre.

2 Ratskeller Markt 1 0371/694 98 75 The venerable town-hall restaurant in the Neues Rathaus comes up trumps, with good regional cuisine and painted cellar-vaults that are an Art Nouveau take on medieval.

3 Turm-Brauhaus Neumarkt 2 0371/909 50 95 Opposite the Ratskeller, this popular microbrewery prepares chunky pub-grub favourites such as Schweinhaxe (roast pork knuckle), Schnitzel and spare ribs. Fresh beers produced on-site slip down dangerously easily.

4 Villa Esche Parkstr. 58 0371/236 13 63 Refined but relaxed restaurant in the former coach-house of Henry van de Velde's Art Nouveau villa, with a seasonal menu of gourmet Italian and modern German cuisine – the finest dining in the city. Opening time: Closed Mon
