Based at the site of a Roman military camp from 12 BC, and an easy five-minute walk north of the Altstadt, Mainz's Landesmuseum covers local and regional history quite broadly, but is most impressive for its Roman collection. This includes first-century tombstones of soldiers and civilians, as well as the strikingly ornate Jupitersäule, a triumphal column from the time of Nero.
