Eating

Geberts Weinstube Frauenlobstr. 94 06131/61 16 19 Simple and traditional wine-tavern in one of Mainz's oldest buildings, hugely popular for its local dishes, particularly fish but also game; mains run around €25 and can be washed down with a fine choice of wines. Closed Sat & Sun lunch.

Haus des Deutschen Weines Gutenbergplatz 3 06131/22 13 00. While living up to its name, with hundreds of wines from all over Germany, there's also good-quality and reasonably priced food here (mains €13–18). Particularly good is the fresh or marinated salmon, a traditional Rhine dish, and the venison, but many items on the menu are local and often seasonal. It's also a good place to just drink wine – with Spundekäse, a cheese, onion and cream dip with crusty bread the accompaniment of choice.

Heiligeist Rentengasse 2 The Gothic vaults of a fifteenth-century hospital have been turned into this attractive and inexpensive bistro whose mains (€6–15) are international but include several Italian options.

Zur Kanzel Grebenstr. 4 06131/23 71 37 Delightful restaurant with debonair service and candlelit seating in a courtyard. The French and regional cuisine is hardly experimental, but of high quality with mains priced around €17.
