Light relief from the weight of historical events is at hand at the city's zoo, the Tiergarten Nürnberg (tram #5 or bus #65), which moved to its present site in 1939 when it was evicted from its previous home by the Dutzendteich to make way for more of Albert Speer's architectural megalomania. Still, the move was the zoo's gain, for it's unusually beautiful, lushly wooded and dotted with small lakes. The lakes provide a home for sea lions, penguins and otters, but the star of the show is the female polar bear Flocke, born here in December 2007.
