Northern Bavaria: Franconia

The DB Museum

    Address: Lessingstrasse 6

Opening time: Tues– Fri 9am–5pm, Sat & Sun 10am–6pm

    Price: €4

Brave the pounding traffic along Frauentorgraben to reach the DB Museum at Lessingstrasse 6, with an additional open-air display area around the corner in Sandstrasse. It's Deutsche Bahn's house museum, and tells the story of the railway from its origins in Britain to the thrusting modernity of the ICE high-speed expresses. Highlights include a replica of the Adler, the very first German train, which ushered in the age of rail in 1835 when it travelled from Nuremberg to nearby Fürth. You can also see Ludwig II's royal train and the saloon coach used by Bismarck. The darker side of German railway history is not ignored, with a section of the role of the railway in the Holocaust.
