Among the most photographed of all Nuremberg views is the one east across the little square by Tiergärtner Tor, fringed with atmospheric pubs and with the Kaiserburg towering above. On the west side of this open space is the Albrecht-Dürer-Haus, the fifteenth-century half-timbered house which was the home of the artist from 1509 until his death in 1528. The self-guided tour – supposedly narrated by his wife Agnes – steers you through the details of Dürer's domestic arrangements as well as visiting a mock-up of his studio on the second floor, complete with copper plates and tools used for copperplate engraving. A film explains the significance of his work, which was grounded in realism in a way never previously encountered, as well as recounting episodes from his life, from his youthful travels to Italy to his subsequent fame and commercial success.
