3 Klosterbräu Obere Mühlbrücke 5 Bamberg's oldest Brauereigaststätte is a rambling collection of picturesque buildings on the Bergstadt side of the Regnitz; its Braunbier dates back to its origins as the prince-bishops' own brewery, and there's filling, affordable Franconian food available.
4 M Lounge Kapuzinerstr. 17 Gay (but hetero-friendly) bar and smokers' club in the Inselstadt. Opening time: Open from 8pm
5 Schlenkerla Dominikanerstr. 6 0951/560 50 The classic place to try Rauchbier with a wonderfully historic, beamed interior, simple Franconian food and occasionally grumpy service. Daily 9.30am–11.30pm.
6 Spezial Obere Königstr. 10 09561/243 04 Rustic, traditional Brauereigaststätte in Gärtnerstadt, serving mild Rauchbier as well as a Helles, with simple food to soak up the beer. The Spezial brewery was founded in 1536.
7 Stilbruch Obere Sandstr. 18 0951/519 00 02 The most "alternative" of the Bergstadt bars, still fabulously beamy and old but with a laid-back atmosphere, good music selection and Spezial Rauchbier.
