On the south side of the Kaiserteich lake, the former Rhineland parliament now houses K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which is the city's main contemporary art gallery, picking up where K20's collection of classical modernism leaves off. Installations, video art and photography are interspersed with works in oil or charcoal; among the artists featured are Nam June Paik, Andreas Gursky and the Liverpool-born, Wuppertal-based Tony Cragg. The conversion of the grandiose neo-Renaissance nineteenth-century parliament into a clean, white space with a vast atrium and over-arching glass roof is an audacious work of modern architecture.
