St Gereon
Address: Gereonskloster 2
Opening time: daily 10am–6pm; closed during Sun mass
St Gereon is the most memorable of all Cologne's Romanesque churches thanks to the spectacular decagon at its heart, a monumental space which blends late Romanesque and early Gothic elements. It was reworked into its current form in the early thirteenth century, when the oval core of the church was already nine hundred years old. Some of its medieval frescoes have survived, making its interior less austere than some Cologne churches.
