Viktualienmarkt

Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–3pm

South of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche sprawls the Viktualienmarkt, the city's famous open-air food market, built on ground cleared of charitable buildings belonging to the Church by decree of Maximilian I in 1807. It's much the best place to get a cheap meal in Munich if you don't mind standing up – the various butchers and snack stalls sell hot slices of Leberkäs – literally liver cheese, a type of meatloaf – and delicious, lemony veal Weisswurst – Munich's sausage speciality, traditionally eaten only before midday. As well as Bavarian specialities and fruit-and-vegetable displays, the market has some quite fancy stalls selling wine, cheese and imported delicacies. On the south side of Viktualienmarkt, the Schrannenhalle – a restored market hall – offers an indoor version of the market with an emphasis on places to eat and drink.
