One of the newest of Munich's attractions is on the northeastern edge of the city, yet the giant Allianz-Arena is worth the trek for fans of architecture as much as for football fans, for it's a spectacular building. Designed by Swiss team Herzog & de Meuron – who also designed London's Tate Modern – and completed in 2005, the 70,000-seat stadium resembles an enormous tyre laid alongside the Autobahn thanks to its air-cushioned facade, which can be illuminated white for the national squad or in the colours of the two soccer teams that play there – red for Bayern München, blue for TSV 1860.
