Schwabing
The Englischer Garten borders Schwabing, the once bohemian but now safely middle-class neighbourhood where Thomas Mann wrote Buddenbrooks. Lenin and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke are among the other famous figures associated with Schwabing. Its literary and artistic heyday ended with World War I, and though the district became a centre of student radicalism in the 1960s it's not these days the sort of place you'd associate with slogans, except perhaps the kind written by advertising copywriters. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant and lively part of town, with some attractive Jugendstil architecture and plenty of café life.
