The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum's near neighbour, the Schack-Galerie houses the art collection built up by Adolf Friedrich Graf von Schack (1815–94), a diplomat who in later life devoted himself entirely to his literary and intellectual pursuits. As an art collector he favoured young and little-known artists, in the process building up a collection of works by artists who were to number among the most important in nineteenth-century Germany, including Anselm Feuerbach and Arnold Böcklin. To this day the collection reflects Count Schack's personal tastes since – with the exception of a handful of losses during World War II – it remains largely unchanged.
