    1 Ampere im Muffatwerk Zellstr. 4, Haidhausen Hip retro Seventies-styled club in the Muffatwerk cultural complex on the Haidhausen side of the Isar. Eclectic music policy with live bands and DJs.

    2 Eat the Rich Hessstr. 9, Maxvorstadt The cocktails are served in half-litre measures at this packed party locale near the university, which at least eases pressure on the bar. Opening time: Tues– Sun 7pm–3am

    3 Kultfabrik Grafinger Str. 6, Haidhausen Pioneering "Partygelände" – a sprawling complex of bars and clubs behind the Ostbahnhof that first opened in the late Nineties under the name Kunstpark Ost and has since spawned imitators, though it remains under threat of demolition at the end of 2010. Highlights include the rock bar Titty Twister and the hardcore techno hangout Strobe-Club.

    4 Nektar Stubenvollstr. 1, Haidhausen 089/45 91 13 11. Stylish, dress-to-impress blend of lounge, restaurant, cabaret, bar and disco; the stunningly lit Salon Blanche is the inner sanctum. Surprise menu €49; Opening time: closed Mon

    5 Optimolwerke Friedenstr. 10 Closer to the Ostbahnhof but with about half Kultfabrick's twenty-odd clubs, highlights at this Partygelände include Club Duo, which plays r'n'b and hip-hop, and Harry Klein, a house and electro club that pulls in big-name international DJs.

    6 Regina-Haus Maximiliansplatz 5 City-centre nightlife complex with an outpost of the famed Spanish Pacha club empire, the small but trendy electro-club Rote Sonne and the Max und Moritz disco, which lures a young crowd with cheap drinks. Opening time: Open Thurs– Sat

    7 Schwabinger 7 Feilitzschstr. 7, Schwabing The shanty-town architecture wouldn't win any prizes but this rocky, studenty Schwabing bar has long enjoyed cult status. It's threatened by redevelopment, but locals hope the credit crunch will provide a stay of execution.

    8 Café am Hochhaus Blumenstr. 29. More bar than café, attracting a young, gay crowd to a prominent site opposite Munich's only Weimar-era skyscraper.

    9 Carmen's Theklastr. 1. Munich's most popular gay and lesbian disco, attracting all age groups with its soundtrack of oldies and chart hits.

    10 Kr@ftakt Thalkirchner Str. 4 Relaxed Glockenbachviertel café-bar that is one of the lynchpins of the Munich lesbian and gay scene.

    11 Author Pick Prosecco Theklastr. 1. Tiny, camp bar that blends alpine kitsch with every other variety of decorative excess. The music is a mix of German Schlager tunes (schmaltzy German pop) and made-in-Munich Eurodisco hits.

    12 Selig Hans-Sachs-Str. 3 The most stylish gay and lesbian bar in Munich, though despite its name – which means "overjoyed" – some of the customers appear to take themselves a little too seriously.

    13 Atomic Café Neuturmstr. 5 089/228 30 52 www.atomic-cafe.de . Club and live venue in the heart of the Altstadt, with an emphasis on live gigs by indie bands.

    14 Backstage Wilhelm-Hale-Str. 38 089/126 61 00 www.backstage.eu Live venue west of the Hauptbahnhof along Arnulfstr., with a varied programme of reggae, dancehall, guitar rock, folk, goth, cabaret and more. Tram #17.

    15 Jazzbar Vogler Rumfordstr. 17 089/29 46 62 Live jazz, Latin and soul music in the Gärtnerplatzviertel. There's an entry charge on Mondays and at weekends, and dancing on Saturdays.

    16 Jazzclub Unterfahrt Einsteinstr. 42, Haidhausen 089/448 27 94 The big names of the international jazz circuit alternate with new discoveries at this Haidhausen jazz club, where there are also regularly-changing temporary exhibitions of modern art. Opening time: Open Fri & Sat until 3am, otherwise 1am

    17 Cuvilliés Theater Residenzstr. 1, 089/21 85 01. Beautiful Rococo auditorium, used as a stage for drama productions by the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel.

    18 Deutsches Theater Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 11, Fröttmaning 089/55 23 44 44 www.deutsches-theater.de The main venue for big-budget musicals and cheesy tribute shows, recently relocated close to the Allianz-Arena in the suburbs.

    19 Gasteig Rosenheimerstr. 5 089/48 09 80, www.gasteig.de . Modern convention centre in Haidhausen that is also Munich's main concert venue, with everything from classical concerts by the Münchner Philharmoniker or Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks to pop, rock and jazz.

    20 Münchner Kammerspiele Maximilianstr. 26–28 08/233 96 60 www.muenchner-kammerspiele.de . Principal venue for the Münchner Kammerspiele's productions of serious drama, from Shakespeare to Kafka.

    21 Nationaltheater Max-Joseph-Platz 2 089/21 85 01 www.bayerische.staatsoper.de The beautiful Neoclassical Nationaltheater next to the Residenz is the city's principal stage for opera and ballet; it's the home venue for the Bayerische Staatsoper and its orchestra, the Staatsorchester.

    22 Prinzregententheater Prinzregentenplatz 12 089/21 85 02 www.prinzregententheater.de With a design based on the Bayreuth Festspielhaus – but more opulent and with higher levels of comfort – this is a venue for both classical, jazz and world music as well as drama.

    23 Residenztheater Max-Josephs-Platz 1 089/21 85 01 Modern theatre sandwiched between the Nationaltheater and Residenz; it's the principal stage of the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel.

    24 Staatsstheater am Gärtnerplatz Gärtnerplatz 3 089/20 24 11 www.staatstheater-am-gaertnerplatz.de Opera, operetta, jazz, dance and musicals are all in the repertoire of this beautiful nineteenth-century theatre south of Viktualienmarkt.
