Address: St-Jakobs-Platz 1
Opening time: Tues– Sun 10am–6pm

The Münchner Stadtmuseum occupies a rambling complex of buildings, the oldest part of which – the medieval Zeughaus or armoury – dates back to 1491–93. Centrepiece of the museum is the permanent exhibition Typisch München (Typically Munich), which provides an overview of the city's history, including a reappraisal of how the city spun its own myths at the time of the museum's foundation in 1888. There's also a section dealing with Munich's role as "secret capital" of West Germany during the Cold War, with a "Chill Out Loden Lounge" in which images of football stadiums and beer tents, laptops and Lederhosen are projected. The darker side of Munich's history is dealt with by a section on its role as the "Hauptstadt der Bewegung" – the capital city of the Nazi movement.
