Guarding Prinzregentenstrasse's western approach is the Haus der Kunst, a stripped Classical pile commissioned by Hitler, and completed in 1937 as a showcase for the sort of art of which he approved. Its architect, Paul Ludwig Troost, made his name designing the interiors of ocean liners, but missed the mark here, for what was obviously meant to be an imposing building is too squat to have the desired effect: it looks more like the plinth for something much bigger than a finished building. These days it's used for temporary exhibitions of the sort of modern art, design and photography the Nazis would have regarded as "degenerate".
