1 Augustiner Grossgaststätten Neuhauser Str. 27
089/23 18 32 57 The Augustiner brewery's city-centre flagship is right in the main pedestrian shopping zone, in a very attractive late nineteenth-century building with atmospheric interiors and a garden out back.
2 Augustinerkeller Arnulfstr. 52
089/59 43 93 The vast beer garden under shady chestnut trees makes this place particularly popular with the locals. There's Augustiner Edelstoff export beer on draught, and simple food including grilled fish or chicken to soak up the alcohol.
3 Chinesischer Turm Englischer Garten 3
089/38 38 73 27 Vast Biergarten at the foot of the eponymous pagoda in the heart of the Englischer Garten, serving Hofbräu beers and with an elegant restaurant nearby.
4 Hofbräuhaus Platzl 9
089/290 13 60 The "most famous pub in the world" is vast and, unsurprisingly, overrun with tourists, but at least one visit is a Munich "must". If the noise and crowds are too raucous, push your way through to the Biergarten, a pleasant oasis in the shade of chestnut trees.
5 Hofbräukeller Wiener Platz
089/459 92 50 Imposing neo-Renaissance place in Haidhausen, attracting a wide range of customers including politicians from the nearby Maximilianeum. The Hofbräu beer aside, there's also a wide range of inexpensive food.
6 Paulaner am Nockherberg Hochstr. 77, Giesing
089/459 91 30 Naturally cloudy Nockherberger beer – which is only available here – plus typical specialities like Obazda (soft cheese) and Leberkäs – a type of meatloaf – are among the charms of this Biergarten attached to a modern beer hall.
7 Weisses Brauhaus Tal 7
089/290 13 80 Handsome old Brauhaus belonging to the Schneider brewery, once Munich-based but since 1944 based in Kelheim and known particularly for its Schneider Weisse wheat bear and for the Weisswurst sausages it serves. Open until 1am daily.
