The Asamkirche is officially the church of St John Nepomuk, but universally known by the name of its creators, the Asam brothers, who between 1733 and 1746 created the most gaudily theatrical – if by no means the biggest – church interior in Munich, a riot of Rococo opulence just 28m long and 9m wide. The design of the little church was influenced by both Bohemian and Italian Baroque, and it was intended as their own family chapel, which explains its opulence – without a client, all restraints were off.
