The Georgengarten

Hannover only truly looks the part of historic royal capital in the gardens laid out a fifteen-minute walk northwest of Steintor. Of the quartet of gardens planned during the ducal tenure, Welfengarten abutting the city is the most forgettable, though popular with students who laze between lectures in the Welfenschloss at its east side, a preposterous piece of Gothic Revival with faux battlements. More romantic is the Georgengarten beyond, whose neat lawns and mature trees are a model of the naturalistic English style that Romantics conceived as a "walk-in painting".
