Housed in a building that resembles a concrete bunker the Historisches Museum is an enjoyable take on the town museum. Models and maps follow Hannover from a kernel trading outpost on the Leine onwards, including postwar footage of the devastation wrought by the Allies and details on EXPO2000. On the ground floor, among the remnants of the former sixteenth-century armoury, a Rococo stagecoach straight from Walt Disney's Cinderella outshines the three other carriages that are on loan from the House of Hannover. The museum incorporates into its fabric the solid Beginenturm (1357), a relic of the city fortifications that girdled the city in Hanseatic days.
