1 Acanto Dragonerstr. 28 Bar and club, where classic funk and soul, house and Latin are spun for an older crowd beneath high brick vaults drenched in washes of colour – one of Hannover's most glamorous venues.
2 Brauhaus-Ernst-August Schmiedestr. 13. The brewery for unfiltered Pils Hanöversch and a local institution that sprawls over several rooms, some of which host live music and DJs several times a week – open till 5am at weekends.
3 Bronco's Schwarzer Bär 7. Funky retro-chic bar and club 1km west of the centre with rich velour wallpapers and leather couches. Party tunes lure a friendly crowd onto a small dancefloor.
4 heimW Theaterstr. 6 Metropolitan chic in a stylish lounge-bar with teardrop lights, located in one of the classiest districts of Hannover.

Lister Turm Walderseestr. 100 Hannover's largest beer garden has room for six-hundred drinkers outside its historic pile at the west edge of the Eilenriede park near Lister Platz U-Bahn – unbeatable for a traditional booze-up in summer, but the food is hit and miss.

Strandleben Weddingenufer Deckchairs, parasols and sand between the toes at Hannover's best city beach, on a bend of the Leine River south of the Georgengarten, neutral ground for hipsters and counter culture alike. The soundtrack is chilled funk, Brazilian and nu-jazz grooves. Follow signs for Faust e.V. Opening time: Closed Oct– April.
