A little to the north of the Kaiserdom, the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst houses the city's collection of modern and contemporary art in a striking postmodern building by the Austrian architect Hans Hollein, whose design owes something to the Expressionist architecture of the 1920s. The collection spans the period from the 1960s to the present day, from American Pop Art and Joseph Beuys to works by Gerhard Richter, Bruce Naumann and a younger generation of artists including Julian Schnabel.
