East of Luisenplatz looms the red-sandstone Residenzschloss, a mishmash of ages and styles. In the eighteenth century, French architect Rémy de la Fosse was commissioned to design a Baroque replacement, but only two wings were built. One of these dominates the north side of Marktplatz. The older Renaissance wing houses the Schlossmuseum, whose paintings, furniture and objets d'art – including Jugendstil pieces from Mathildenhöhe – give an insight into life at the Darmstadt court.
