3 Bockshaut Kirchstr. 7–9 06151/996 70 Reasonably priced regional cooking plus lighter choices, in an atmospheric, traditional-style Gasthaus close to the Stadtkirche and Rathaus. There's a shady terrace, and a simpler smokers' bar, Datterichs Äbbelwoi Stub.
4 Café Bormuth Marktplatz 5 06151/170 90 Sumptuous cakes and a large selection of reasonably priced breakfasts, though it's not quite as swanky as it was in its 1950s prime.

9 Oberwaldhaus Dieburgerstr. 257, am Steinbrücker Teich 06151/71 22 66 This ivy-covered and rather splendid restaurant is a popular excursion stop, 4km by cycle or bus from the centre of Darmstadt. There's Schnitzel, steak and fish on the menu, and numerous paths into the woods outside along which to walk off your meal. Opening time: Open daily until midnight
